How we calculate

A running cost here is the energy a model uses times the electricity price in your country. Below is where both numbers come from, how we calculate, and what we assume about usage.

Data sources

Energy use: EPREL

EPREL, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling, is run by the European Commission. Suppliers must register each model with an EU energy label there before selling it in the EU. We take the energy class, energy use and technical data from EPREL without changing them, and link to the official label and product information sheet on every product page.

57,879 models in our database, last updated October 13, 2026.

Electricity prices: Eurostat

Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, publishes household electricity prices for every EU country twice a year (dataset nrg_pc_204). We use the price for households using 2,500 to 4,999 kWh a year, including all taxes and levies, in euros. For each country we use the newest half-year Eurostat has published, because countries are not always updated at the same time.

Eurostat data last updated October 9, 2026.

CO₂ from electricity use

The CO₂ intensity per country is the European Environment Agency's indicator for the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity generation, currently for 2023. It counts the electricity generated in the country, not imports, and it is a national average: a green tariff or solar panels lower it. Only the use of the product is counted, not its manufacture, which for TVs and monitors can cause more CO₂ than years of use.

Images and descriptions: Icecat

Product images, titles and descriptions come from Open Icecat, a free catalogue of product content supplied by manufacturers. We show them as published, without warranty of correctness or completeness, and only in the language of the page: when Icecat has no text in that language, we show none. Energy data always comes from EPREL.

Formulas

Monitors and TVs

kWh per year = power in on mode (W) × hours a day × 365 ÷ 1,000

We use the on-mode power for standard dynamic range (SDR) content from the energy label. Standby power is listed in the specifications but not included in the cost.

Washing machines

kWh per year = energy per 100 washes (kWh) × washes a year ÷ 100

The energy label gives the energy use of the eco 40-60 programme per 100 washes. Other programmes, especially hot washes, use more. We show the water used per year in litres; the cost of water is not included.

From kWh to euros

cost per year = kWh per year × electricity price (€ per kWh)
cost over 10 years = cost per year × 10

The long-term figure uses today’s price for every year, without inflation or price changes.

CO₂ from electricity use

kg CO₂e per year = kWh per year × CO₂ intensity of electricity (g CO₂e per kWh) ÷ 1,000

Example: LG 55UR78006LK

  1. 81 W × 4 × 365 ÷ 1,000 118.3 kWh kWh per year
  2. × €0.2896 €34.25 per year
  3. × 10 €342 over 10 years

LG 55UR78006LK uses 81 W in on mode. At 4 h a day: 81 W × 4 × 365 ÷ 1,000 = 118.3 kWh a year. At €0.2896 per kWh (EU average, 2025-S2): 118.3 × €0.2896 = €34.25 a year, or €342 over 10 years.

Example: Whirlpool WRSB 7259 BB EU

  1. 52 kWh × 220 ÷ 100 114.4 kWh kWh per year
  2. × €0.2896 €33.13 per year
  3. × 10 €331 over 10 years

Whirlpool WRSB 7259 BB EU uses 52 kWh per 100 washes. At 220 washes a year: 52 kWh × 220 ÷ 100 = 114.4 kWh a year. At €0.2896 per kWh (EU average, 2025-S2): 114.4 × €0.2896 = €33.13 a year, or €331 over 10 years.

Usage assumptions

What a product costs to run depends on how much you use it, so you can change the usage on every page. These are the defaults:

  • 6 h a day Monitors: 6 hours a day (our assumption).
  • 4 h a day TVs: 4 hours a day, the figure the previous EU energy label for TVs was based on.
  • 220 washes a year Washing machines: 220 washes a year, the figure the previous EU energy label for washing machines was based on.

Implausible values

Suppliers enter their figures in EPREL themselves, and a few are clearly wrong (a large TV at under 1 W, a washing machine at hundreds of kWh per 100 washes). When a display uses less than 0.005 or more than 0.25 W per square inch of screen, or a washing machine less than 2 or more than 20 kWh per 100 washes per kg of capacity, we show the value as registered but calculate no running cost, leave it out of averages and comparisons, and list it last.

What the numbers do not show

  • Your own tariff Eurostat prices are national averages. Your contract, night rates or solar panels change what you pay.
  • How you use the product brightness and picture settings, programmes and load size change the real energy use.
  • The purchase price running costs are one part of what a product costs you over its life.
